Welcome to KindergartenThe Franklin Regional School District, in collaboration with the United Way of Westmoreland County’s “School Readiness Initiative,” looks forward to welcoming parents of preschoolers and providing numerous opportunities for them and their children to become familiar with the staff, kindergarten program, and elementary facilities before they enter school.

Franklin Regional will hold “Orientation for Kindergarten” meetings designed for the parents of preschoolers who will transition to the district in the fall of 2017.

Parents of preschoolers may attend this informational meeting, at their child’s home school, to learn more about kindergarten programming, receive official registration materials and will be able to sign up for a registration appointment at the event.  The Newlonsburg Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. in the Newlonsburg Cafeteria.  The Heritage Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. in the Heritage Gym.  The Sloan Kindergarten Orientation will be held on Monday, February 27, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. in the Sloan LGI.

The official Kindergarten Registration window for the 2017-2018 school year opens March 13, 2017 and closes April 28, 2017.  The Franklin Regional School District strongly encourages parents to register their child within the window because placements at their neighborhood school are not guaranteed after the April 28 cut off.  As a reminder, children must celebrate their 5th birthday on or prior to September 1, 2017 to be eligible to enroll for kindergarten for 2017-2018.

Transition events continue throughout the spring months and include multiple opportunities for each family to visit their neighborhood school.  One of the most popular is the “I Love My NEW School” literacy event!  On this evening, preschoolers and their families meet storybook character, “Pete the Cat” and participate in themed centers with each school’s kindergarten teachers, the principal, and other school staff.

In August 2017, incoming kindergarten students and their parents participate in an informal “Meet & Greet” day at their neighborhood school.  Children meet their official homeroom kindergarten teacher, and once again have personal contact with the building principal, counselor, and nurse.  During this event, students learn about bus safety, practice lunch procedures, and have a healthy snack.  Volunteer mentors offer building tours and children have the opportunity to meet fellow classmates and play together on the school playground.  Parents new to the kindergarten experience meet one another and sign up to visit the school with their child on a “Staggered Start” day.

The final kindergarten transition phase is “Staggered Start.”  This experience takes place for all new kindergarteners and a parent on one of the first two days of school.  The parent-child team come to school for an abbreviated school day with a small group of classmates.  They spend time with the teacher, explore the classroom, ask questions, participate in activities, and learn more about the expectations of kindergarten.  At this time, parents have the opportunity to ask any last minute questions and share concerns regarding their child’s first official day flying solo as a kindergarten student.
